Scientific Freediving

Our benthic sampling team was prepared to sample via SCUBA for a week. Due to logistical challenges, we had to modify our approach and sample via free diving. All color images shot on Nikon F5 using Kodak Portra 160 and Fuji Superia Xtra.

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts is a small dual-island country in the West Indies. Our teams worked with the Bureau of Standards and Department of Marine Resources to consult on ciguatera poisoning. We planned to sample multiple sites for fish and macroalgae. Unable to collect fish offshore every day due to vessel and dive tank availability, one team freedove shorelines for macroalgae while another purchased fish at markets and gathered information from local fisherman.

Scouting and Site Selection

Swimming distance, rip current, and surf eliminated 2 possible locations due to sample integrity concerns… and safety.
